Botox (Botulinum Toxin) is something we read about and see on a daily basis but what actually is it, how does it work and is it safe?

Botox Injections: What exactly is Botox?

From a cosmetic point of view Botox is used to temporarily improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles mainly on the forehead and around the eyes. When Botox is injected, it has an effect on both muscles and sweat secretions.

By being injected into the muscle, it is minimising the repeated effect of muscle contractions from frowning and squinting. Thus, preventing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles!

So, what is Botox and how does it work? Botox is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It is a neurotoxin meaning when it is injected its job is to interrupt the connection between the nerve and the muscle.

When no toxin is used the nerve would tell the muscle to contract when required. For example, if you are angry you would frown caused by the muscle contracting.

After Botox injections, the nerve can no longer deliver the message because it has been blocked so our muscles stay relaxed, impacting the skin on top.

As the muscle cannot contract as strongly as before, the lines normally seen on the surface of the skin cannot form as easily.
