Eat Your Way to Glowing Skin With These Superfoods
‘Superfoods’; they’re a huge talking point right now, but what exactly are they?
Superfoods can be anything, from fruits and vegetables to meat, fish, and even dairy products… anything that’s bursting with nutrients and delivers high doses of vitamins, minerals, and other good stuff to keep us happy and healthy.
But not all superfoods were created equal. The healthy fats in avocado, for example, are great for protecting the heart, while the polyphenolic compounds in green tea may keep inflammation at bay. There are even some superfoods that could help you get fresh, glowing skin, too!
Eat your way to glowing skin with these 3 delicious superfoods:
While the healthy fats in avocado may be better for your heart than your skin, the healthy fats in salmon are most definitely considered to be skin-boosters. That’s because salmon, and other oily fish like tuna, contain the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which aren’t found in plant-based foods. These fatty acids play an integral role in the health of the skin cells found in the epidermis — the outer layer of the skin — and help to keep your skin looking great.
Blueberries are a classic superfood, and it’s easy to see why. These berries may be small, but they’re packed full of powerful antioxidants which fight off harmful free radicals in the body. The free radical theory of aging suggests that it’s these molecules that are responsible for sagging skin and wrinkles, so overpowering them is essential for minimising the common signs of aging and keeping that bright, luminous glow. Goji berries are another antioxidant-fuelled superfood, and are great thrown in some muesli.
When it comes to healthy, glowing skin, many people look for foods that increase collagen production. However, it may actually be better to look for foods that prevent collagen breakdown, like garlic. Garlic is a powerful (and somewhat smelly) superfood that contains a small amount of sulfur; a mineral that may hold the key to collagen longevity… and it’s great for keeping vampires away, too. Collagen works to keep the skin flexible and elastic, providing you with a smooth surface that really radiates.
Keep on shining
Including these superfoods in your daily diet is a fantastic way to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy, and bring out your natural glow. But we can’t be good all the time! To maintain your soft, smooth, and bright complexion, it’s recommended that you give your skin a little extra boost every now and then with an expert facial to exfoliate and remove any dead skin cells, moisturise and hydrate, and provide an added ‘oomph’.
