What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an alternative to other types of hair removal such as plucking, shaving, and waxing. Carried out at a professional clinic or salon by a trained practitioner, a laser device is used to effectively and efficiently remove hairs across the desired treatment area. Laser hair removal is suitable for the face, hands, legs, underarms, shoulders, bikini line, and back, and typically offers more thorough removal and longer lasting (sometimes permanent) results that other forms of hair removal.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

All types of hair removal laser use heat energy to achieve the desired results. The procedure is non-invasive, which means that heat is delivered to the epidermis — the surface layer of skin — and is then absorbed by the hairs and travels down to the middle layer — the dermis — which is where the hair follicles are located. The heat energy kills the hairs at the root, creating severe damage and causing them to fall out.

This is the basis of laser hair removal, although some types of lasers do work differently to others. Standard hair removal lasers achieve hair loss through delivering very high heat. At Medical Cosmetics, we use a different type of laser, known as the Soprano laser, which achieves the same results using SHR (super hair removal) technology. This delivers low levels of heat at different wavelengths for a more comfortable experience.

What is the Procedure Like?

The procedure is very simple. The area of skin to be treated is first prepared with a gel solution, and the laser wand is gently placed onto the skin. The practitioner moves the laser around the area to deliver heat to the necessary parts of the skin. The procedure using standard lasers can be quite disjointed as the laser must only have single contact with each area due to the risk of burns and blisters from the high heat.  This means that the laser will constantly be lifted and moved as necessary. At Medical Cosmetics, our low-heat Soprano laser can be applied to the skin multiple times, allowing us to take a more thorough approach to hair removal and ensure a quick and efficient process.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Take?

The length of an appointment will depend upon the area of the body that is being treated. Laser hair removal is very quick, with small areas such as the chin typically taking less than 5 minutes. Larger areas can take 45 minutes or more. For best results, it is recommended that multiple sessions are scheduled to ensure all follicles are damaged.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Pain is subjective, and some people may experience pain during the procedure while others will not. Generally, standard laser hair removal can be quite uncomfortable. However, the Soprano laser that is used here at Medical Cosmetics is more comfortable as it uses low levels of heat only. The feeling is often likened to a hot stone massage.

Does it Really Work?

Yes! Over the weeks following treatment, hairs will start to fall out from the treatment areas as the follicles begin to die off. However, results will vary from person to person, and can be affected by the colour of the skin as well as the colour of the hairs

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

In many cases, laser hair removal is very safe. When standard lasers are used there is a risk of burns and blisters due to the high heats that are used, but these risks are negligible with the Soprano laser. Anyone that has a history of cancer, is pregnant, is taking herbal or prescription medications, or who has cold sores in the treatment area should speak to their practitioner as another form of hair removal may be suggested.

Who Can Have Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal works best on those with dark hair. That’s because dark hair contains more melanin (pigment) which absorbs the energy from the laser. Lighter hair contains less melanin, and while initial results may be excellent the rate of regrowth can be quicker. Those with very dark skin may not see desired results as the melanin on the surface layer of skin absorbs energy preventing it from travelling deeper to the dermis.
